In order to overcome his addiction, he was admitted to the Hazelden Drug Recovery Center in Minneapolis. Despite these efforts, Bret struggled with his addiction after relocating to Tampa, Florida.

His father supported him by putting him in charge of an exotic animal import firm in the hopes that it would provide him with a fresh start.
